ELEC 471, Fall 2010
Prof. Rich Kozick

Homework 5

Date Assigned: Friday, September 24, 2010
Date Due: Friday, October 1, at 11:00 AM
(HW is due on Friday since ELEC 480 exam is on Wednesday, Sept. 29.)

  1. Exam 1 will be on Wednesday, October 6 at 3:00 PM. The topics for the exam will include Chapters 1 and 2 (sections 2.1 and 2.2) of the text, Homeworks 1 through 5, and the digital communication application.

  2. Reading: Please study Chapter 2, Sections 2.1-2.4.

  3. Please solve the following problems at the end of Chapter 2 and submit solutions on Oct. 1 at 11:00 AM:
Chapter 2: 2.2.3, 2.2.4, 2.2.5 (draw a tree), 2.2.6, and 2.2.9 (in part d, n refers to the number of tries before generating a busy signal).

We will have a short quiz on Sept. 29 at 3:00 PM that is similar to the digital communication example on Homework 4. The quiz may require you to perform a simulation in Matlab, so please make sure you can access your Matlab files from Homework 4 in the classroom.

  4. Presentations: You may recall from the course syllabus that each student will have the opportunity to deliver a presentation to the class. We will begin the presentations on October 1. I would like the following students to present their solution to Problem 2.2.9:
    Toby Comer and Matt Hotard
The students will present their solution as a group, so they should get together before class on October 1.

  5. Develop a MATLAB simulation program for the salesperson model discussed in class. That is, you should simulate a large number of trials, and determine the probability of at least one successful sale in N sales calls, assuming that the calls are independent and that p is the probability of a successful sale on a call. Perform a simulation for the case of N = 10 calls and p = 0.2. Compare your simulation result with the analytical result, and please submit your MATLAB program by email.

Please answer the following questions using analysis (not simulation) and explain your reasoning.

Thank you.
