ELEC 226, Spring 2010
Prof. Rich Kozick

Homework 9

Date Assigned: Thursday, April 1, 2010
Date Due: Tuesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 15, 2010 (at the beginning of class at 8:30 AM)

  1. Exam 2 will be on Thursday, April 8. The topics will include filter analysis and design (as in the low-pass filter in Lab 4), all of Chapter 10 (sinusoidal steady-state power, maximum power transfer, and power factor correction as in the class example on March 25 and 30), and the beginning of Chapter 7 (the problems on Homework 8 and the circuit in Figure 1 of Lab 5). The relevant homework assignments are 6 and 8 and labs 4 and 5.

The exam will be open-book and open-notes, and you will need your calculator.

  2. Reading: In the Nilsson/Riedel text, please continue to study Chapter 7, Sections 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3.

  3. All students will do Lab 5 on Thursday, April 1.

  4. Please solve the following problems in Chapter 7 for April 13:
    RL Circuits: Problems 5, 8, 15, and 19.
    RC Circuits: Problem 27 (change 60 ohm to 60,000 ohm), 21, 30, and 32.

  5. Please solve the following problems in Chapter 7 for April 15:
RL Circuits: Problem 19 (we will solve most of problem 7.19 in class on April 13).
    RC Circuits: Problems 21, 30, and 32.

    Hint for Problem 7.21:
Combine the series capacitors into an equivalent capacitor. Refer to Section 6.3 to determine the initial voltage on the equivalent capacitor. Then find i(t), which will allow you to find v1(t) and v2(t). You will find that for large t, the voltages v1(t) and v2(t) do not approach 0, and this leads to "trapped" energy.

  6. All students will attend lab on April 8 and 15 for Lab 6. Then we will not have labs on April 22 and 29.
Thank you.
