Homework 7

Date Assigned: Monday, March 22, 2010
Date Due: We will discuss in classes on Thursday, March 25 at 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM (you don't have to solve before those classes)
Nothing needs to be submitted for Homework 7, other than your summary page for Lab 4. Please see Homework 8.

  1. Schedule Change: We will not have lecture on Tuesday, March 23 at 8:30 AM because I have a meeting at Villanova on that day. We will make up the lecture on Thursday, March 25 from 1:00-1:52 in Dana 307 (we will not have a lab on March 25). So we will have two lectures on March 25 (8:30 AM and 1:00 PM), with a short quiz at 1:00 related to Chapter 10 (sinusoidal steady-state power). My goal is to finish Chapter 10 on March 25 by reviewing Homework 6 and solving the problems listed below. Then we will move on to Chapter 7 next week.

  2. Reading: Please read the links about reactive power and power factor correction on the Class Notes page for this course.

For March 30 and April 1, please review Chapter 6 and read Section 6.3 carefully, with emphasis on how to include the initial voltage/current values when combining capacitors/inductors in series and parallel. Continue to study Chapter 7, particularly Sections 7.1 and 7.2.

  3. Please solve problems 10.58 and 10.59 on maximum power transfer.

  4. An exercise on power factor correction will be handed out in class on March 25.

  5. Design four high-pass filters to meet the following specifications using the concepts in the notes Insights for Filter Design and the methods from Lab 4. (That is, specify the circuits and the values of the components.)

  6. If you did not submit the summary page for your lowpass filter in Lab 4, then please submit it before you leave Dana 307 on March 25. I will help you if you have questions.
Thank you.
