Homework 3

Date Assigned: Wednesday, September 5, 2012
Date Due: Wednesday, September 12, 2012

  1. Reading: In the Ulaby/Maharbiz text, please study Chapter 3, with emphasis on Section 3-1, the node-voltage method. The node-voltage method is very general and it can be used to analyze any circuit. Also, please begin studying Section 3-2 on the mesh-current method, and read Section 3-3 (but we will not discuss or explicitly use the material from Section 3-3).

Please read Sections 3-4 and 3-5 for class on Sept. 12 and Lab 2 on Sept. 13 and 18.

  2. Labs: Please see the lab schedule, with
    Lab 1 on Sept. 6 & 11,
    Lab 2 on Sep. 13 & 18, and
    no labs on Sept. 20 & 25.
Please bring your textbook, class notes, and breadboard to all lab sessions.

  3. Please solve the following problems in Chapter 2 of the textbook and submit solutions in class on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
    2.30 (series/parallel resistors).
2.38: Solve using Ohm's Law and KCL to find V0 = 11.8 V (voltage and current division are not applicable, despite the instructions in the problem - well, actually you can solve the problem this way, as we discovered in class on Sept. 10!). Then solve the following problem with the same circuit: Suppose that V0 = 11.8 V is given, and use source transformations to show that Vout = 0.2 V. (This second problem may be solved with voltage and current division, but you should solve it using source transformations.)
    2.39, 2.40, 2.42, 2.47 (look for a Y with equal resistors).
2.46: Solve first using Y-Delta transformations. Then look for a "balance bridge" and see if you can solve it more simply (that is, are some of the resistors in series in the balanced bridge?).
Thank you.
