Homework 10

Date Assigned: Wednesday, November 11, 2009
Date Due: Wednesday, November 18, 2009

  1. Reading: In the Nilsson/Riedel text, please study Chapter 6 on capacitors and inductors.

For the week of November 16, please study Chapter 9 on sinusoids, phasors, impedance, and circuit analysis. Begin with Sections 9.1-9.6, but eventually we will study the entire chapter. Also, review Appendix B on complex numbers.

Chapter 9 provides a nice review of everything we've done so far in this course. We will be applying all of the circuit analysis methods to find the sinusoidal steady-state response, or how circuits behave when the voltages and currents change with time as a sine wave. The new twist is that voltages and currents will be complex-valued phasors, while resistors, capacitors, and inductors will be modeled by complex-valued impedances.

  2. We will perform Lab 6 on November 12 and 19, beginning at 8:10 AM. The class will be divided into the same two groups as for Lab 5.

  3. Please solve the following problems in Chapters 6 and 9 and submit solutions on November 18:
    Chapter 6: 26 and 39.
    Chapter 9: 1 and 2.
    Notes:
    • In Problem 6.39, the term "dc voltmeter kicks upscale" means that a positive value of voltage is measured (so the voltage is larger at the + side compared with the - side).
    • For Problem 9.1 (c) and (d), the answers in the back of the book should have units mV (not V).

  4. Exam 2 will be on Friday, November 13. The exam will be closed-book and closed-notes, and will emphasize the topics from homework assignments 5 through 9 (Chapters 4 and 5) and labs 3, 4, and 5. The exam will include a take-home question that will be due on Monday, November 16 at 9:00 AM.

The specific topics include the following:
